Soccer
Soccer symbolizes Brazil even better than Carnival. It unifies the nation; the country eats, drinks, and dreams futebol. Newcomers to a community can join its social life by becoming fans of a local team or by playing soccer themselves. When Brazil’s national team orchestrates a victory, the resulting euphoria lifted the national morale burdened by the falling value of the real and other social concerns. In a society where the rich and powerful ignore or change inconvenient laws, everyone knows and observes the rules of soccer, a game in which personal talent, rather than money or connections, prevails. The sport demonstrates the possibility of social justice to people who are often powerless in their everyday lives. For this reason, they love the game. Brazilians also play soccer with an exuberance, agility, spontaneity, and creativity that are representative, in great part, of their national character model.
